The answer depends on your total household income and your state of residence. If you are single and receive $25,000 per year or more in taxable income, or $32,000 for a couple filing jointly, you may have to pay federal tax on a portion of your benefits.

Currently, fourteen of the 50 states also apply some form of tax to these benefits if your total income exceeds a certain threshold.
