Why do people chosse baby boys over baby girls?

Traditionally, boys stayed with the family and contributed to elderly relatives, whilst girls were married off and went to live with the husbands family. In these traditions, often they had to be given a dowry when they left, as well. In western society, there is still a dying out obsession with having a son to carry on the family name (of the father). In farming families, across the world, the strength of a young male is always handy. In many cases, though, boy babies carry more genetic problems eg classic haemophilia, which is carried as a genetic fault in women but only males actually suffer from it. Nobody seems to realise that these male babies will want sexual partners, eventually, so the shortage of women would increase their status.
