In backgammon, you do not need to roll the exact number to remove your checkers (chips) from the board. You can move your checkers based on the numbers rolled on the dice, but when bearing off, you can move a checker from the furthest point occupied by your checkers if you cannot use the exact number rolled. However, if you can bear off a checker using the exact number, that's usually the preferred move.
