The original inhabitants of the Enchanted Island, commonly referring to the island of Puerto Rico, were the Taíno people, an Arawakan-speaking indigenous group. They lived in organized communities and had a rich culture that included agriculture, fishing, and craftsmanship. The Taíno referred to Puerto Rico as "Borikén," meaning "the land of the brave lord." Their population and way of life were significantly affected following European colonization in the late 15th century.
