Who is credited with first domesticating they wild turkey?

While Navajos in the American Southwest often penned turkeys and the Aztecs and Mayan civilizations revered the bird, it was the Mexicans who have been credited with first domesticating the turkey. Turkeys were abundant enough in the eastern United States that they were simply hunted rather than kept as animals.
