In 1885, the population of western Canada, which included areas such as British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, was relatively small, estimated at around 200,000 to 300,000 people. The region was still in the early stages of development, with many Indigenous communities and a growing number of settlers, particularly following the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway. This population was predominantly concentrated in urban centers and along transportation routes.
