What is a non-fiction story?

Nonfiction is (in example, a book) something that is mainly based on cold, hard facts; of maybe a certain story where an author was running from the police, the account of the story would generally be completely true (of course there are some gray areas, but the jist of the story is something that wasn't made up/fantasized).
