It has been the state bird in California since 1931. It has many different names such as the California Partridge, Catalina Quail, Topknot Quail, and Valley Quail. It can be found in Baja California, Mexico, and up through the western states in Canada. Its eastward range goes to Nevada, Utah, and Idaho. It is rarely seen in Colorado.
