How do you check for vacuum leaks on a 1980 Chevy pick up?

Best way to do it would be to warm engine and use a can of starting fluid to spray hoses and vacum connectors, as you are spraying listen for the engine to change speed, when this occurs you have found your vacum leak. I would also be advisable to have a fire extinguisher made for garage or kitchen just incase.
