How long does it take to get newborn's birth certificate?

I'm pretty sure the timeframe varies by state. My state (Louisiana) didn't send my son's to me until he was almost 9 months old. I'm not sure if that's usually how long it takes, or because the vital records department was swamped at the time (even in 2007) due to Hurricane Katrina. I want to say, though, that it seemed like they told me 6 months was the wait time. I got his social security card before his birth certificate!
