In the movie great escape what do the three Americans use the potatoes for and what happens to piglet?

In "The Great Escape," the three Americans use the potatoes to create a makeshift tunnel cover, disguising their escape efforts from the German guards. They carve the potatoes into a shape that resembles their own heads to place on their beds, creating the illusion that they are still in their bunks. Unfortunately, Piglet, one of the escapees, gets caught during the escape attempt and is subsequently executed by the Germans as a consequence of his capture.
