You can do a corporate search on the corporation to see the status. Many times the Secretary of State for each state will tell you why they are suspended and whether or not it is at the State of Federal level.

You can also use resources like Lexis Nexis or Westlaw and run a corporate search. In some cases the amounts owed come up.
