What is a carrier code?

A carrier code, at least in respect to telephones, is a way of choosing a long distance provider to make a phone call. To use the this option, enter 1010 followed by a 3 digit code to indicate which company to use. You may or may not recall, there were a host of commercials earlier this millennium talking about low cost long distance rates (the one that still sticks in my head is 10-10-220). While these rates are better than a lot of companies, IMHO, they are not as good a rate as you can get with a prepaid calling card.
