What are terms like MDDO and DPM called?

MDDO (Maximum Daily Delivery Obligation) and DPM (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, among many others), are abbreviations. If the initials made a Word such as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) or SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) they would be called acronyms (acro = top + nym = name).
