The American bison once numbered in the millions. The Indians depended on them for food, and in an effort to bring the tribes to their knees, the government decided to exterminate them. So called buffalo hunters followed the herds by rail, and slaughtered nearly all of them. The last 1100 animals were rescued, and they can now be found in several refuges, with numbers in the tens of thousands.
