The pulmonary and aortic valves close during the diastole phase of the cardiac cycle, specifically at the end of systole when the ventricles relax. This closure occurs to prevent the backflow of blood into the ventricles from the pulmonary artery and aorta. The sound produced by this closure is often referred to as the second heart sound (S2).
