How long will it take to train to be a primary school teacher in England?

A reasonable set of GCSE passes (minimum of C grade) which MUST include English, Maths, & Science. Particularly useful subjects include Geography, History, RS, Art, Design & Technology, Music, Drama, Languages.

At least 2 full A2 Level passes (preferably at C grade or better) in subjects relevant to the primary school curriculum - eg English, Maths, Sciences, Art/ Performing Arts, Humanities etc..

Essential general skills/ attributes include: good interpersonal & communication skills; basic competence in IT; experience of working with children (eg helping with playgroups, holiday clubs etc, or work in community drama, music, youth groups etc), and creative arts, musical, acting/ performance, or sporting interests/ skills are also very useful.

Admission to primary teacher training courses will be determined not only by academic credentials & references, but also by performance at "interview", which is likely to involve not only formal interviews, but also presentations, group activities/ discussions, & practical problem solving exercises based on real classroom/ school scenariOS. Successful candidates are likely to demonstrate a reasonable understanding of contemporary educational debates/ issues; have a reasonably informed general understanding of how children develop & learn, and be aware of, & sensitive to, such matters as social exclusion, disability etc and how these may impact upon a child's educational & life "chances".

Most primary school teacher training courses last 4 years (BA with Qualified Teacher Status/ Primary Age Range) and include Educational Theory & Practice; Curriculum Studies; Specialist Subject Studies; Pedagogy, plus substantial teaching practice in schools.

The trainee teacher must also pass competency tests in English, Maths & IT; be in good health, and pass an "Enhanced Disclosure" Criminal Records Bureau check.
