How do you prune a worcester berry?

My son pruned our worcester berry with a chainsaw - just ran the chainsaw up and down the plant cutting off about a foot of the growth all the way round - it was very effective and grew back the next year with super vigour and wonderful fruit - most of which the birds had because you can't get near the bush! When we arrived here it was the only deerproof bush we had in the garden.
