These actions are prohibited by law when you're passing another vehicle:

  • crossing the white line beside the shoulder
  • using the shoulder to pass
  • crossing a double-yellow line
  • crossing a single yellow line on your side with a broken line on the other side
  • moving into the passing lane if there is an approaching vehicle, regardless of the lines marked on the road
  • no clear sight ahead to make a pass
  • not enough distance ahead to make a pass safely
  • passing in an intersection -- a big no-no all the time
  • disregarding any posted "do not pass" signs
  • disregarding any posted sign that has nothing directly to do with passing, such as curve ahead 20MPH
  • acting unsafe in a construction zone
  • being unsafe when passing a horse drawn buggy or agricultural vehicle
  • hugging a tractor trailer without completing the pass
  • blowing your horn before, during, or after passing a vehicle
  • blowing your horn at all when horses or other livestock are present
  • speeding to pass the vehicle; exceeding the speed limit
  • drag racing beside the other vehicle
  • speeding up then falling back but never completing the pass
  • flashing your high beams as you pass the other vehicle
  • using any gestures that indicate road rage, etc. as you pass the vehicle
  • running out of broken line to make the pass or forcing oncoming traffic out of their lane
  • cutting back to the right lane without "safe distance" between you and the vehicle you had been passing
  • any action you make that causes a collision or runs another driver off the road
