American Express renews their cards based on an internal algorithm that includes the following elements:
* Reason for renewal (e.g., expired, potential fraud closure, lost, etc.)
* Amount of customer spend (i.e., how much is the annual spend of the customer)
* Type of customer use (e.g., does the customer carry a balance, spend once per month, etc.)
* Type of card (e.g., card types change Behind the Scenes and the company may want to phase out that card type)
* Potential regulatory or legislative changes (e.g., if the laws/regulations may change, the company may want to stay flexible and have a card expire earlier)
Most American Express cards that I have been privy to seeing had expiration dates three (3), five (5) and six (6) years from when they were issued to cardmembers.
