How do you get gnats out of hair?

Specifically, scientists classify the insects in question in the Dipterid suborder Nematocera. Nematocerans can become lodged in animal and human hair. The way of removing all stages -- from eggs to adults -- is the same for animals and humankind: brush, comb and shampoo.
