It depends on a couple of things: what you are making, and if you are looking for an alcoholic or non-alcoholic alternative. 1st question, you have to ask yourself if substituting some other liquid would deminish the target product. If no, continue to the next question. This involves thinking about the flavour you're trying to capture. Non-alcoholic substitutions are a bit trickier. You have to be careful what you choose. With other alcohols, you can pretty much choose whatever you like. Choosing rum or some other type of liquor won't change anything but the flavour, in most cases. Hope I helped!
