What is unauthenticated key exchange?

Unauthenticated key exchange is a method of establishing a shared secret between two parties over an insecure channel without verifying each other's identities. This process allows the parties to generate a common key for encryption, but it is vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks since there is no authentication to ensure the legitimacy of the communicating parties. As a result, while the key exchange may be secure in terms of cryptographic strength, the lack of authentication can lead to significant security risks. To mitigate these risks, additional measures, such as digital signatures or certificates, are often recommended.
