The practice of cesarean section (C-section) dates back to ancient times, with some of the earliest documented instances occurring around 500 BC in Greece. However, it wasn't until the 19th century that the procedure became more common and safer, largely due to advances in surgical techniques and anesthesia. The first successful C-section in which both mother and child survived is often attributed to Scottish surgeon James Young Simpson in 1848.
