What is the beat count in modern music?

my husband is a jazz/rhythm and blues musician...I know nothing on the subject... he hates all my music choices from classic ray Charles to pink and Eminem...he says its due to the "western music 4/4 count beat" he likes my choice of Kashmir by Led Zeppelin otherwise we can't agree..Anyone like to educate me on the subject beside his sobish, "I've been classically trained" answer...
