Mary Godwin Shelley began a romantic relationship with a friend of her father's named Percey Shelley, who happened to be a married man. In 1814 they ran off together, first to France, and then all around Europe. On their return Shelley was pregnant, and after Percey's first wife died, he and Mary were finally married late in 1816. Mary spent the following decades raising her son alone and writing.
