How old does your child have to be to have a guinea pig?

I got my first guinea pig when i was 7 but my mom did all the work so she got rid of it and gave me another one a week ago and now I'm 13. she makes me keep it in my room so i will keep it clean so my room doesn't smell which i don't really mind cleaning his cage out anymore its fun to play with him ^^
