Why are plants usually the first organisms to spread to a new area?

A herbivorous animals would not go to live in a place with no plants and a carnivorous animals would not go to live somewhere with no prey, a plant however gets it's nutrients from the soil and sun so can live almost anywhere it's seed lands.
