The US Naval blockade of Southern ports was increasingly successful. The South had no industry to speak of, and had to improvise throghout the war, to try to compensate. And the Confederate dollar became worthless towards the end.

The North enjoyed great prosperity, with huge demand for war supplies that its factories could supply, and freedom to import and export.
