What are the 4 kinds of discourse?

Ordinary experience suggests there are four basic horizons of discourse.

(1) We want to explain or inform about something.

(2) We want to convince or persuade someone of something.

(3) We want to describe what a thing looked like, or sounded like, or felt like.

(4) We want to tell what happened.
