Why are sunflowers called sunflowers?

The "annuus" part of the name comes from the fact that the common sunflower, unlike other related species, is an annual plant and not a perennial. The genus "Helianthus" comes from the the Greek Word "HeliOS", or sun, and the Latin Word "anthos", meaning "flower."
