Many people make use of polyurethane or urethane foam when they want to insulate their home or fill their chair, couch or mattress. It may even be used as a mattress bad. They may also be more well known as memory foam, and it gets this name from its ability to contour to a person’s body shape and “remembers” its shape. If you do not want to ruin the foam or make it “forget” your body, you will need to wash it with the utmost care. Therefore, it will require more patience than any other kind of fabric will require, but it is still possible for you to wash polyurethane foam right in your home.

For this project, you will need a bathtub, a bottle to spray with, some laundry detergent, some warm water and a washcloth.

  1. Take your foam and put it into the bathtub or anywhere else that it can become bathed. If it is the filling in your couch or in your cushion, simply remove it by unzipping it and leaving the cover behind.
  2. Fill a third of the spray bottle with your detergent, and fill up the rest of it with your water. Mix it well by shaking it all around.
  3. Take your mixture and spray it all around the foam. When one side is complete, you can flip it and spray it all over the other side as well. After you have completely coated the foam, allow it to settle and stand there for about half an hour.
  4. When the half hour has gone by, do not spray it with water to wash off the detergent. You will need to get a washcloth and dampen it, gradually wiping off all of the detergent.
  5. Let it air dry or set up some fans to speed up the process. However, you should not let it sit beneath direct sunlight. You may have to wait 24 hours to a few days before it completely dries, and this will depend on how wet you made your foam. Therefore, it is recommended to do this only if you will not need it for a bit.
