Why did Gandalf and beorn warn the travelers so sternly to stay on the path in The Hobbit?

Mirkwood was a dangerous place. It was very easy to get lost in the woods as well. There were giant Spiders in the woods. The Necromancer in the woods that hadn't been driven out yet. And the elves were not likely to be friendly.
