3-Phosphoglycerate (3-PGA) is primarily produced during the process of photosynthesis in plants, specifically in the Calvin cycle. In this cycle, carbon dioxide is fixed into organic molecules using energy from ATP and NADPH generated in the light-dependent reactions. The enzyme ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) catalyzes the reaction between ribulose bisphosphate and carbon dioxide, resulting in the formation of 3-PGA as an intermediate. Additionally, 3-PGA can also be formed during glycolysis in the breakdown of glucose.
