What is the purpose of a gift card?

You buy a giftcard which is sort of more thoughtful than money. Giftcards are for certain shops which allows you to buy stuff using the card; the people who paid for the card have put money on nthe card; the downside is you cant spend it anywhere and the date will expire too.
