The Long March was primarily a strategic retreat undertaken by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to escape the encirclement and military pressure from the Nationalist forces led by Chiang Kai-shek. Beginning in 1934, the CCP aimed to preserve its leadership and regroup in a more secure area, ultimately leading to the establishment of a base in Yan'an. The march was also motivated by the need to strengthen the party's position and gain support among the rural population. Despite the significant losses, it became a symbol of communist resilience and determination.
