The Army, and to some degree the other services uses the concept of color of arm of Service. This practice was far more widespread in the German Heer than the uS, though there were colors of arm on pants stripes (in the uS) hence Red Legs for the artillery, yellow stripes for Cavalry , plain Olive drab for the footmen- infantry. The concept naturally was transferred to vehicles. Unofficially, Black was for intelligence and secutiry-spy tactics. Spy planes are always painted flat black like the U-2 and the A-ll, later the SR-7l, as are some X-craft. Helicopters are aircraft, may adhere to the same scheme. Black for Intelligence.
