What is the spanish phrase for ward off?

I need this because im doing this science paper about making up your own bacteria species. I wanted to name it ward off but that sounds stupid in english. so i wanted it to sound cool and exotic and spanish is the perfect language for that. but i just started my first week of spanish, so we haven't learned to say anything yet. so ppl plz help me!!!!!!
