Why did edward want to wait 5 years to change Bella?

Edward wanted Bella to experience more of life and be absolutely sure that she wanted to become a vampire. Waiting five years would give Bella time to mature and gain more life experiences before making such a permanent decision. Additionally, he wanted her to have time to establish herself as a vampire without feeling rushed into an irreversible choice.
