Why do male have beard?

It is not always clear what purpose secondary sexual characteristics in males such as beards, chest hair, etc., originally had. Beards seem to serve a similar function as manes in animals like lions or horses and is either an esthetic adaptation to appeal to females or it helps make a male seem larger to other males, etc.
