Is it illegal to own a 50 cal sniper rifle?

In MOST US States, a private citizen that is at least 18 years old, and has LOTS of money may legally purchase a rifle in caliber .50 BMG. A few states, California among them, have outlawed private ownership of these very large rifles. With a GOOD scope, expect to pay $5000-$7000 for one.
