BBM supports emoticons. Open the blackberry messenger and start chat. press the "Sym" button on your phone. The first page will be traditional text symbols. Pressing the "Sym" button a second (and third) time will bring up the emoticons that are available.

Also there are some hidden emoticons you can use on your chat. Copy the emoticons from the list [link is in below]. Save them as auto text and use when necessary.
