Stinging cells, or cnidocytes, in jellyfish are used primarily for defense and capturing prey. Each cell contains a specialized structure called a nematocyst, which can rapidly eject a venomous filament when triggered. This allows jellyfish to immobilize or deter predators and to stun or capture small prey, facilitating their feeding process. The venom can cause varying effects, from mild irritation to severe pain in humans.
