Who Created Whataburger?

Whataburger was created in 1950 by Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton in Corpus Christi, Texas. Dobson, a food enthusiast and entrepreneur, wanted to make a burger so big and tasty that customers would say “What a burger!” after the first bite — and that’s exactly how the name was born.

The first Whataburger stand opened on August 8, 1950, serving burgers for just 25 cents each. Over time, the chain grew rapidly across Texas and the Southern U.S., becoming a regional icon known for its large, customizable burgers and 24/7 service.

Today, Whataburger has over 800 locations and remains one of the most beloved fast-food brands in America, especially in the South.
