St. Cyril's given name was Constantine. He was born in Thessalonica in 827 AD and later took the monastic name Cyril when he became a monk. Along with his brother Methodius, he is known for his missionary work among the Slavic peoples and for developing the Glagolitic alphabet, which laid the foundation for the Cyrillic script.
