Why do vultures throw up?

Vultures regurgitate as a defense mechanism to lighten their load for flight when threatened. They may also do this to dispose of indigestible parts of their food, such as bones and feathers, or to cool themselves down since their food can be warm. Additionally, vomiting can help deter predators by creating a foul smell, making the vultures less appealing as a target.
