The red wolf was hunted to near extinction, and as the population declined, it was learned the species was hybridizing with the coyote. Once roaming from Virginia to Texas, the red wolf was existing as a remnant population on the Texas-Louisiana border. In the 1970's, the last remaining 14 purebred red wolves were captured, and put into a captive breeding program. In the late 1980's, a population of red wolves was released into the Alligator River Wildlife Refuge in eastern North Carolina. The program was a success, and now 110 red wolves roam the area in several small packs. Some hybridization with coyotes was found, but has since been minimized, as the red wolf population grows, coyotes leave the area, giving way to the larger canine. Plans are for further reintroductions to take place in parts of their former range, as new areas with suitable habitat are explored.
