How did the Germans use zeppelins and aeroplanes in World War 1?

Large blimps were used in World War 2 because they could spend many hours high off shore trying to spot submarines. At 10,000 feet high, the anti-aircraft guns could not get to them. From that height, they could see underwater and could see submarines.
