Technically, it was established under the direction of President Theodore Roosevelt by then Attorney General Charles Bonaparte. Bonaparte opened the Bureau of Investigation under the Justice Department on 26 July 1908. In 1909 it was merged with the Bureau of Prohibition and renamed the Division of Investigation. In 1935, under the Directorship of J. Edgar Hoover, the department was made an independent agency and renamed the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
