Before the release of Final Fantasy, Squaresoft (now Square Enix) developed several notable games, including "Rad Racer" (1987), a racing game that utilized Mode 7 graphics, and "The 3-D Battles of WorldRunner" (1987), an early 3D platformer. They also produced "King's Knight" (1986), a unique action role-playing game, and "The Final Fantasy" series was initially conceived as a last-ditch effort to save the company from financial difficulties. These earlier titles helped establish Squaresoft's reputation in the gaming industry prior to the success of Final Fantasy in 1987.
